Wu, who competed at her first Olympics in 2008 as a 15-year-old, will spearhead a seven-strong diving team in Tokyo that includes three male debutants.

Australia is sending a smaller team than usual after opting against entering a team into last month's World Cup in Japan, meaning they couldn't secure quota spots in the synchro events which is where Wu won a silver medal in Beijing.

Rio bronze medallist Anabelle Smith will compete in her third Games, Esther Qin her second, while Nikita Hains, Cassiel Rousseau, Sam Fricker and Shixin Li will all make their Olympics debut.

A two-time one metre springboard world champion for China, 33-year-old Shixin - who came out of retirement and then switched his allegiance in 2019 - will make history as Australia's oldest diver to make their Olympics debut.

Wu, now 29, said that due to shoulder and rib injuries,she may not have even qualified if the Games went ahead in 2020 as scheduled.

But she dominated the women's 10m trials this year to join Jenny Donnet and Loudy Tourky-Wiggins as Australia's only divers selected for four Olympics.

"Having an extra year injury-wise was a really good thing," Wu told AAP.

"I would have struggled a lot more last year the state I was in and having very little time to prepare.

"If the trials were last year, I would have struggled to be at my best to try and make the team so this extra time was a gift for me so I definitely made the most of it."

As well as juggling her own activewear clothing line and various diving coaching roles, Wu owns a weightlifting gym with her brother Joshua.

She said she spent the extra 12 months fine-tuning her skills and improving her strength.

"I've spent the year working really had on a lot of my weaknesses so I was lucky I had that time to improve," Wu said.

"Particularly in regard to strength - being able to jump higher, spin faster, be more dynamic so I feel a lot more confident now than I did four years ago.

"I'm excited to see those improvements and where I can go from there."
