The tree carries historic significance that dates back to the Battle of Lone Pine in 1915.
And in the case of the eastern Riverina township it is fitting that a Lone Pine is added to the main street to accompany the military memorabilia.
The town already has an armoured personnel carrier, an anchor off a ship and several other pieces of memorabilia with significance.
This is a chance to expand the avenue.
- Cr Ian Marston
Lockhart Shire Councillor Ian Marston told the Eastern Riverina Chronicle the tree, estimated to be about six foot tall initially, will be planted on July 24.
He said the aim was to recognise the 100th anniversary of the avenue of honour at The Rock.
“This is a chance to expand the avenue,” Cr Marston said.
The tree will be located opposite the war monument, and close-by the town’s RSL Club.
Cr Marston explained that the tree being planted at The Rock is an actual decedent of the original tree from Lone Pine.
He said the military memorabilia at the eastern Riverina town was something special for both locals and visitors.
Cr Marston said the exhibits in the main street were something tourists and visitors could look at.
Already the town is home to a ship’s anchor, believed to been from HMAS Wagga.
There is also a stabliser fin of an F111 aircraft along with a tank.
The planting on Tuesday, July, 24 will attract dignitaries from the Army Recruit Training Centre at Kapooka and former deputy prime minister Tim Fischer of Boree Creek. Cr Marston said the addition of a Lone Pine tree was something special for The Rock.
He said the town was doing well in terms of attracting tourists and visitors to the region.
Together with the opportunity to climb The Rock Nature Reserve, use the new cycling and walking track and the associated equipment and also visit local businesses he said there was plenty to see and do.
Cr Marston said it was a common sight to see tourists in the town.
