Mr Withers is a former Corowa Golf Club committeeman and president and wants to see the pool saga resolved.
Administrator Mike Eden had hoped to confirm a 25m indoor pool for Corowa during his tenure, but the issue will roll over to the return of councillors next month.
“It has been going on for far too long,” Mr Withers said.
“There has been a lot of lip service over the years, but at least now with these grants we appear to have the money to do something.
“The town was asked to have its say and the vote was for the 50m pool.
“For those involved in swimming and the like if that is what is required then it’s what they should have.”
Mr Withers was at the helm of the golf club five years ago when financial pledges of more than $200,000 helped save one of the town’s biggest tourism drawcards.
He spent a total of seven years on the committee of the golf club which recently received $585,000 to help establish a cinema from funds made available as a result of the Corowa and Urana shire merger.
Mr Withers, who is standing as an independent candidate, ended his association with the golf club three years ago.
“I thought the time was right to pass onto others as I think it is time now for our council to have new people with fresh ideas for all of the Federation Council area,” he said.
Another priority is encouraging more industry to the Corowa area to support existing major employers, Riverlea and Uncle Tobys.
“We certainly need it,” he said.
The Federation Council election field is expected to have close to 40 candidates, but only 18 were officially registered on the NSW Electoral Commission website on Monday.
Nominations close at noon on Wednesday.
