The pavilion is flooded, the ground outside waterlogged and the horse area unsafe to be ridden on.
With only four dry days forecast before October 15, the committee made the “heartbreaking” decision to cancel the 70th show.
“Even if we had no rain between now and the pavilion would still be unuseable,” The Rock Show president Jim Payne said.
The entire committee voted to cancel the show due to the state of the grounds.
“Common sense prevailed,” he said.
The Rock isn’t alone in its decision to cancel the show with a handful of other shows in the region cancelling or changing their program due to wet weather.
Narrandera, Wagga, Ardlethan, Hay, Barmedman and Harden were all cancelled or altered due to the weather.
Mr Payne has been involved with the show for 15 along with his wife Barbara.
The couple have never seen the grounds so soaked except for during the 2012 floods.
“It was a heartbreaking decision but we didn’t have a choice,” Mrs Payne said.
With the showgrounds situation near the base of The Rock Hill all the water running off the hill settles on the showground and golf course.
The Rock golf club (who share the same grounds) are closed indefinitely. The second hole on the course is totally underwater.
Tractors and mowers cannot be used at the grounds due to the waterlogged ground.
The committee expect the grass will be knee high by the show with no way to cut it due to persistent rain.
Show secretary Joy Schulz was also distressed the show had to be cancelled.
“It is very disappointing,” she said.
The decision to cancel the show rather than postpone it was made due to the show calendar which sees many rides committed to other events.
Fundraising for the 70th show will continue for the show which will on next year.
If forcing to cancel this year’s show wasn’t enough the show grounds have also been hit by thieves in the last week.
A ride on lawn mower, leaf blower and scarecrow were all stolen from the show committee.
