Given the rural and regional nature of the shire most of the councillors have a commitment to the rural and farming sector.
The Local Government of NSW conference is scheduled for December 4 to 6 at the Hyatt Regency in Sydney.
Ironically this conference also coincides with the grain harvest in southern NSW. It was decided at the meeting that Cr Ian Marston would represent the shire council at this event.
During the mayoral report Rodger Schirmer gave kudos to the many community projects in the region.
The meeting also noted a recent funding announcement which will see some $723,000 granted for flood mitigation at Streven Street, The Rock. A tourism event called Thrive Riverina, which is set to feature produce from the region will be launched at The Rock on September 6.
The launch will be held at Marrocka Emu Farm, The Rock. Councillors praised the work of the new walking and bike track from the township of The Rock to the Rock Hill Reserve.
Despite the recent wet weather the director of engineering David Webb was acknowledged for the excellent work in overseeing the new developments.
The Grain Harvest Management Scheme was discussed and it was decided to have the dates for this from November 1 to January 31. Cr Schirmer explained that during this period of time farmers in the shire were harvesting the winter crop.
“This allows farmers to “guess” or estimate the weight over axle, and while it is not desirable to add the burden to our roads the fact is it serves a purpose,” he said.
“It serves a purpose to farmers who are trying to do the right thing.” Council will continue to participate in this scheme.
