Goulburn is much more than a pit-stop on the Hume Highway.
Goulburn is an intriguing destination on the road between Sydney and Canberra. It's rich in heritage and natural beauty, so there's a lot more to it than a pit-stop at McDonald's. Even the lead singer of iconic Australian band The Church, Steve Kilbey, said he wouldn't bypass Goulburn on a road trip. In his words, "Goulburn has a Gothic sensibility. There's a sense of melancholy but it's interesting and inspiring."

Goulburn is home to the 15-metre-high Big Merino, one of the many Big Things we Aussies seem to be obsessed with. While for a local it's by no means the most interesting part of town, visitors love climbing to the top for a view out the ram's eyes.
For history buffs, a self-guided heritage tour of the city is a must. As Australia's first inland city, Goulburn's cathedrals, courthouse and old shopfronts have stood the test of time. Take in a show at the new Goulburn Performing Arts Centre on Auburn Street. Opened last year, the centre is attracting a huge variety of top-notch shows and performances, and putting high quality local theatre on a bigger stage. The building has also won several awards for its architectural adaptation of Goulburn's old Town Hall.

The Rocky Hill War Memorial and Museum, perched high up with a view of the entire city, is a lasting tribute to the men and women of Goulburn who served during World War I. The small museum on site recently underwent a major renovation, more than doubling the exhibition space.
Hidden down the very cute Russell Lane, you'll find Goulburn Donut Shop and some of the most delicious donuts. Eat them while enjoying the garden at the Belmore Park.

With cute swinging chairs, wooden decor and green plants, Noi is a Vietnamese restaurant with a tasty beef pho and a whole quail on the menu. You'll find a big wood-fired oven cooking up pizza at the Green Grocer and if you're lucky you may even be served by one very polite robot. If you're looking for a classic pub feed, the Hibernian Hotel offers generous servings as well as live music to liven up your weekend.
The Abbey Motel is one of the city's newest motels. Set in a historic precinct opposite the stunning St Peter and Paul's Cathedral, its architectural features deftly blend in with Goulburn's heritage. Its rooms are light, bright and spacious and the motel is located next to Roses Cafe. Mandelson's Hotel, built in the 1840s and converted into accommodation, is also an option for those wanting to take a step back in time.
Once an abandoned brick pit, the Goulburn Wetlands are now an oasis of wildlife and eucalyptus trees. Expect to hear the songs of a huge variety of birds, the croaking of frogs and - at the right time of day - catch some very chilled out kangaroos.
