So far a public appeal has raised about $4.5 million with the money promised to go directly to those who lost their homes and livelihoods.

Payments include $20,000 to the families of those who died and $10,000 to anyone seriously injured.

A separate payment of $10,000 is available to anyone who lost a home with an extra $1000 for each child in the household.

Human Services Minister Michelle Lensink said the government had assured the appeal funds were being distributed quickly.

"We know South Australians affected by the state's devastating fires are hurting and many have been through tremendous tragedy and loss and these SA bushfire appeal donations will go some way in helping people rebuild their lives and homes," Ms Lensink said.

In the Christmas-New Year bushfires, more than 80 homes were destroyed across the Adelaide Hills and more than 50 on Kangaroo Island.

Three people also died, one in the Hills and two on the island.
