Back in 2012 The Rock experienced severe damage due to flooding.
Minister for Police and Emergency Services David Elliott visited The Rock on Saturday today to announce the pledge and view the works.
The funding is provided under the Floodplain Grants Scheme, which is part of the Natural Disaster Resilience Program.
Lockhart Shire Council general manager Peter Veneris welcomed the announcement saying the $860,000 contribution towards the $1 million project will help complete the significant flood mitigation projects undertaken by the Council since 2010 and 2012 when the Shire experienced the two biggest flood events in its recorded history in the space of three years.
He said stage one of the works had been completed at both Lockhart and The Rock.
"Stage two works at Lockhart are currently under construction and the financial assistance announced on Saturday by the minister will allow us to proceed with stage two works at The Rock," he said.
"The Council appreciates the Government's support as it will help provide protection to the towns from significant flood events in the future," he said.
Mr Elliott said preparing for natural disasters and building community resilience was vital.
