Albury Highway Patrol Sergeant Matt Zemaitis said the man rolled the black Suzuki after getting to speeds of 140km/h and the car is believed to be stolen from Queensland the previous day.

"At 9.04am on the Hume Highway at Bowna a vehicle was detected doing 140km/h, police attempted to stop the vehicle and a pursuit was initiated," he said.

"Subsequently the pursuit was terminated due to safety concerns.

"Half an hour later police were notified the vehicle had crashed at Culcairn.

"The offender was located nearby on the Olympic Highway and arrested."

Sergeant Zemaitis said the car was stolen from Queensland at 12pm on Sunday.

"The offender will be charged with police pursuit drive manner dangerous, taking and drive conveyance, possession of stolen property outside state as well as numerous other driving offences," he said.

Concerned residents took to Facebook to share their near-misses with the driver.

"Thank goodness he was arrested, he mounted the footpath in Culcairn nearly hitting pedestrians," one comment said.

"He scared the hell out of five of us when he was on the footpath outside the craft shop and supermarket. It's just lucky we were all quick to move," another comment said.

The man is assisting police at the Albury police station.

EARLIER: A man is in custody in hospital after he rolled his car after a high-speed chase north of Culcairn this morning.

The black Suzuki ended up on its side on Reapers Road around 9.30am.

Police searched nearby farms looking for the driver before making the arrest.

A farmer, who didn't want to be named, told The Border Mail the car was "absolutely flying" along the road.

"He was travelling around 120km/h I'd guess," he said.

"He almost lost it near my driveway, I heard something not sure what it was and apparently they got him near the railway line.

"Police searched the farms in the area looking for him after they had given up chasing him."

The man said around seven police cars were on scene.

"The most police we've ever had in the street," he said.

"It happened at 9.20am exactly because I looked at my phone immediately."

Albury Highway Patrol said a offender was now in custody in hospital before he will be questioned by police at the Albury police station.
