The 29-year-old woman was found at the popular tourist destination in the Nitmiluk National Park on Saturday afternoon.

She had been swimming in the upper pool of the waterfalls when she drowned, despite members of the public trying to rescue her, police said in a statement.

Efforts are being made to notify her family.

NT Police will prepare a report for the Coroner.

On Tuesday in the nearby Kakadu National Park, a French tourist accidentally sparked a large-scale search operation.

Yann Buriet, 31, decided to spend five nights camping alone under a rock shelter, unaware park rangers had raised the alarm after they noticed he had not returned to his car for several days.

There have been a number of deaths in remote areas of the Northern Territory in recent years, including that of German tourists Wilfried and Gisela Thor, who died in 2017.

In August 2018, Alex Rosenberg went camping alone at Edith Falls and he has not been seen since.

Also last year, a 12-year-old boy was found dead 120 metres away from a young family of three on the outskirts of Willowra.
