The Spiders' win was their first in more than a month, and with a reasonably good draw ahead they could yet press for an unexpected finals appearance.
Henty's eight-point loss completed a bad day for the visitors, with star midfielder Daniel Cox tearing a hamstring that could see him miss a month.
Ben Baker, Matt McDonald and Steve Jolliffe were outstanding at ground level for Howlong, while Peter Hancock took control of the ruck. The Swampies' news is not all bad, with former player Jarred Farewell applying for a clearance from Rutherglen where he won a Tallangatta league best and fairest.
Billabong Crows recorded one of their best wins since joining the league when they defeated perennial powerhouse Osborne at Urana by four points.
It's the first time the Crows have beaten Osborne since joining the league and continues their giant-killing run in 2019.
The Crows are fourth on the ladder.
They had to earn it the hard way though, as Osborne fought back in the second half after the Crows led at half-time by 27 points.
The Crows did not score a goal in the tense second half, with the Tigers throwing everything at the combine in a bruising affair.
Logan Kerr was best for the home side, along with Bronson Schofield. Declan O" Rourke and Bill Alexander were best for Osborne.
Culcairn made the most of Osborne's loss by thumping Lockhart by 75 points to skip further clear in second place.
League-leading goalkicker Adam Prior dominated with eight goals to take his tally to 47.
Apart from a good period in the third quarter, the home side never threatened, with the Lions' 25 more scoring shots proof of their dominance.
Azzi Medal favorite Jye Shields was again superb, with Tim Hallinan and Nathan Stroh pumping the ball forward to Prior.
Jake Phillips (five goals) was clearly best for Lockhart, with support from first-gamer Ashley Bennett and Jordan Harrington.
- FROM P8
Holbrook made it five wins in a row with a comfortable victory at Coreen over CDHBU in very blustery and wet conditions.
The Brookers' win resulted in them jumping into the top six for the first time in the season.
But they will face a massive crunch game away to Henty this Saturday.
Josh Jones and Andrew Dear both kicked three goals for Holbrook.
Brock Knights, Charlie White and Will Holmes provided plenty of run in midfield.
CDHBU kicked the final two goals of the game to reduce the margin to 61 points, with the ever-reliable Brad Talbot their best performer.
Rand Walbundrie Walla Giants kept alive their finals aspirations with a solid 47-point win over Jindera at the Walbundrie Sportsground.
The Giants put to rest any danger of an upset by taking a 28-point lead at the first change and maintained it throughout.
A dominant and effective forward structure was pivotal for the Giants, with Josh Star (five goals) and Myles Aalbers (four) doing the damage.
Jindera played its best football after half-time, with Mitch Lawrence continuing his wonderful form and a real contender for a club best and fairest award.
When top place Brock Burrum met bottom-placed - and winless - Murray Magpies, most people expected it was going to be one-sided result. That's the way it panned out, with only some horrendous shooting at goal by the Saints preventing a real blow out.
The Saints had 42 scoring shots for just 17 goals in a 125-point win. The Pies only managed to score two behinds for the day.
Brock Burrum's conversion rate has been one of very few lowlights in its season, with other scores of 17.22, 16.23 and 16.20 in the last month.
