The three-day competition is popular with high-school aged agriculture students and helps to provide some valuable insights into the stud breeding industry.

Royal Agricultural Societies (RAS) secretary for the Riverina Group Ag Societies Wal Blezard said there was a mood of optimism at the event after some useful rain fell overnight on Wednesday.

He said a highlight of the event was always the schools competition and students had traveled substantial distances to take part.

The interbreed champion, on the Thursday of judging, was won by an outstanding Poll Dorset ewe exhibited by the Finley High School.

Livestock agent, David Hill of Albury was one of the judges and he spoke highly of the ewe from Finley.

"She was well grown for her age and stood well," he said.

"She was a very feminine ewe and had great muscle."

Students from the western Riverina, at Hay also achieved some strong results. Student Charlee Masters, 16, of Hay War Memorial High School was thrilled to show the champion Dorper ram.

Meanwhile, Billabong High School of Culcairn had a successful day with their South Suffolk Sheep, and The Riverina Anglican College students of Wagga put up a strong showing in the Poll Dorset section.

Yango Agricultural High School from the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area (MIA) was also strong with a quality team of White Suffolk rams and ewes.
