The gym follows after the successful completion of The Rock bike track, which also has fitness equipment. And it also coincides with an announcement of funding to construct a second oval in the town.
At the opening of the gym, which is in the swimming pool precinct, on Friday Lockhart Shire mayor Rodger Schirmer acknowledged the stakeholders who had contributed to the project.
He said The Rock Progress Association had helped to make the gym a possibility. The gym is part of the amenities upgrade at the swimming pool. Cr Schirmer said it was a chance to enhance facilities at The Rock, which was already known for being a successful sporting town. Mr Schirmer confirmed funds had been secured to support a second oval at The Rock but emphasised council was currently looking at development options for the site.
An additional oval was set to add to the football and touch football activities plus junior competitions. Jason Swift of The Rock was one of the first people to jump on the rower, run on the treadmill and lift some weights at the new gym.

Mr Swift, also a personal trainer, said the concept was excellent for people at The Rock and surrounding areas. He said it meant fitness equipment, in a comfortable environment, was now available without making the journey to Wagga. Mr Swift said he believed there would be plenty of interest from people who were keen to use the facilities.
With a keen following of footy, netball and touch in the town he said the gym would be an additional tool for these people.
