The offender, who can’t be named for legal reasons, will spend up to two years in jail for the incident on October 6.
Magistrate Rodney Brender on Thursday told the 23-year-old a message needed to be sent that such behaviour was completely unacceptable.
The 23-year-old had dragged the woman by her hair at their Kennedy Street home, pulling her about four or five metres along the ground.
The victim began crying and the 23-year-old left the house, before returning and punching holes in the walls and in his daughter’s bedroom.
Various items in the property were smashed.
He had threatened to shoot himself, but said it would be a “waste of a bullet” and instead threatened to kill his partner.
The man’s father arrived at the home and the 23-year-old left with his son, a sawn-off gun, tomahawk and ammunition in a sleeping bag.
He removed a bullet and told his dad he was capable of shooting someone.
He was arrested on Wantigong Street in Lavington after his mother called triple zero amid safety fears.
The shortened rifle was found and a search of the Howlong home found a replica pistol and scope.
Mr Brender told the court the Howlong man was on an intensive corrections order for an aggravated break-and-enter in company and car theft.
He also had priors for domestic assault.
“I consider that level of violence, domestic violence … to be completely unacceptable to the community," Mr Brender said.
The man has been in custody since his arrest and was in Junee during Thursday’s sentencing.
Mr Brender ordered the Howlong man spend at least 18 months behind bars before becoming eligible for release on parole.
He will stay in jail until at least April 5, 2020.
The 23-year-old did not react as the sentence was handed down.
