On Wednesday morning, three RFS trucks and eight members departed Wagga to help contain the bushfire on Yankees Gap Road.

The fire started more than one month ago, but it flared up again last weekend due to severe weather conditions.

It is now burning more than 18,700ha and is listed as out of control.

Bradley Stewart, operational officer at Riverina RFS, said crews are set to remain at the site until Sunday.

“They met up with units from Tumut of the Riverina Highland Zone,” Mr Stewart said.

“Six crews in total have formed a strike team.

“They’re working on blacking out and extinguishing fires, as well as conducting back burns where needed.”

Mr Stewart was also deployed on September 13–16 to Bemboka to assist at the fire control centre.

“We haven’t received any additional requests to provide support after this weekend, but that’s not say it wont be coming,” he said.

On Tuesday, a NSW RFS spokesperson said the fire continued to burn in remote areas.

More than 100 personnel, 60 trucks, 16 dozers, 11 helicopters, five fire-bombing fixed-wings aircraft and one large air tanker were involved.

A community meeting about the fire was held at Bemboka Hall on Tuesday that provided an overview and updates.

Albury’s and Corowa’s Fire and Rescue NSW have also been deployed to assist.
