An afternoon tea on August 25 at The Rock Bowling club has been planned. The fundraising event runs from 2.30pm to 4pm with a cost of $5.
Sue Paterson of The Rock said the aim of the event was to raise funds and awareness for Catherine Hamlin’s Fistula Foundation.
Catherine Hamlin says her dream is to eradicate obstetric fistula from Ethiopia.
“I won’t achieve this in my lifetime, but you can in yours,” Dr Hamlin said.
The afternoon tea at The Rock will be supported by guest speaker Mavis Gaff-Smith who is a midwife and an author.
In May this year Dr Gaff-Smith launched her latest book. The book chronicled midwifery in southern NSW, and it also allowed her to relive her own personal history.
Dr Gaff-Smith’s book Midwives and Paddle Steamers was launched by Kay Hull, who was the Member for Riverina back in 2003 when she launched another of the author’s books, Midwives of the Black Soil Plans.
Midwives and Paddle Steamers was the 11th published book by Dr Gaff-Smith, who is a midwife with more than five decades of experience. As the title implies, Dr Gaff-Smith’s latest book recounts the history of midwives around the Murray River.
Her series on southern NSW has followed the stories of these incredible women from the Alps to the Ocean. “One of the most amazing things is the courage of these midwives,” Dr Gaff-Smith said.
Now this lady will help out at The Rock charity afternoon. The aim of the afternoon is to provide funds for the rehabilitation and corrective surgery of girls and women with an obstetric fistula in Ethiopia.
The event will incorporate raffles, stalls and competitions.
