Emergency services were called to the scene on the Olympic Highway just after 9am.
The driver of a blue Mazda died at the scene, while the other man, who was driving a silver Mitsubishi Magna, was briefly trapped, before being released and taken to hospital.
He is in a stable condition, despite suffering several broken bones, and undertook mandatory blood testing.
Crash Investigation Unit officers attended and established a crime scene, while a forensic team were also in attendance shortly after 10am.
Albury and Border Rescue Squad captain Paul Marshall said it had been an extremely devastating scene.
“The Albury VRA responded to a collision on the Olympic Highway,” he said.
“Unfortunately, on the way out here were were updated that one person was deceased and one was still trapped in a vehicle
“When we arrived, we used our equipment and personnel to free him, and he has been taken to hospital with some minor injuries.
“It is unfortunate here today that someone has lost their life.
“It is a high-speed collision on a nice straight stretch of road, so now the crash investigators are here to get to the bottom of it.”
Mr Marshall said based on the damage both cars had sustained in the crash, it was likely both drivers were travelling at or close to the speed limit of 100 kilometres an hour.
The engine of the Mitsubishi was thrown roughly 10 metres clear in the impact, coming to rest in a paddock on the opposite side of the road.
“There were big speeds involved,” he said.
“Basically, both driver's sides have borne the brunt of the collision.
“Thankfully, there was only one occupant in each vehicle.
“The silver car doesn't have a motor in it – the motor was thrown into a paddock on the side of the road.
“It shows the extent of the forces that were put into it.”
The driver of the Mazda is believed to be a man from Wagga.
