They not only cut and style hair but are a listening ear to many in the community.
In fact, communication skills are arguably the number one criteria in this industry.
For Kelly Hughes, who is principal of Hair on The Rocks at The Rock in the eastern Riverina, she is a sounding board for many. She laughs and says if the walls in the salon could talk there would be plenty of stories to share.
But her lips are firmly sealed. The mother of four teenage children prides herself in making her clients look great and also feel amazing. Her hearty laugh is infectious. And Kelly has an ability to find the lighter side in many topics. It’s not unusual for the salon to be filled with laughter.
In addition to working at the salon she is involved in the community in other ways too. She regularly cuts hair of the residents at the Lutheran Aged Care Emily Gardens nursing home at The Rock.
Kelly said her eldest client was 92. “I feel like I am a local, this makes me part of the community,” she said.
“Everyone is entitled to have their hair done and leave feeling great,” she said.
Kelly has also welcomed in Megan Poulter who is with The Leisure Company in Wagga for work experience. Megan accompanied Kelly to the recent Lockhart Shire Business Awards where Hair on The Rocks was named a 2018 finalist.
The business was a runner up in its respective category in 2017.
