Kelly Forrest of The Rock Progress Association welcomed the project and said people don’t have to travel out of town to get fit.
“They can use this at anytime at no cost,” she said.
“It will also help to bring visitors into our fantastic community.”
Mrs Forrest said the progress association, together with the Lockhart Shire Council, were supportive of the project.
“We hope the equipment will be used by many,” she said.
Mrs Forrest said it was envisaged that the sporting groups, including the local footy club, along with school groups or groups of friends would enjoy the walking track and the equipment which is dotted along the way.
And for those who are more adventurous they can take in the challenges of the walking track and new equipment and then climb The Rock Hill Reserve.
“What a way to warm up for your hike up the hill,” Mrs Forrest said.
The exercise equipment compares to a similar project, located at Lake Albert in Wagga, and provides a platform for people in the eastern Riverina town, plus visitors and tourists to take up opportunities to embrace outdoor exercise.
It was hoped the equipment would also be a draw-card for groups who don’t necessarily live or train in The Rock to make the trip out and use the facilities too.
In December last year the Eastern Riverina Chronicle reported on the project and it was confirmed the joint venture with The Rock Progress Association and the shire would be supported through the Federal Government’s Stronger Communities Program. At the time Lockhart Shire Council tourism and economic development officer Jennifer Connor said the outdoor gym, would feature seven strategically placed fitness stations.
“The outdoor fitness equipment will be free to use and will feature a mix of equipment to develop cardio fitness, strength and mobility.” She said each item was designed to be easily accessible and cater to users across a broad range of fitness levels and ages.
“The equipment will be suitable for the novice and the conditioned athlete, and will contain instruction signs and exercise equipment,” she said.
