The challenging event in October this year will be completed by station captain Phil Takle along with Nathan Scholz, Monty Willis and Samantha Bourke.
For Mr Takle and Mr Scholz the challenge had an important connection and they, along with their fellow team mates will be raising funds to fight Motor Neurone Disease (MND).
They lost their good mate, and well respected member of the Henty community, Scott Windsor to MND a couple of years ago.
“There is a strong local connection for us, Nathan and myself lost a very good friend who was a Henty Person, he was someone we went to school,” said Henty fire captain Mr Takle.
“There is certainly a personal motivation there for us,” Mr Takle said.
Henty is known for rallying support when it counts and the plan was to raise funds in the lead up to the event. The group had also established a Climb for MND Go Fund raise page and there are links from the station’s Facebook page.
The event, Firies Climb for MND is on October 20 and features 1504 steps.
Mr Takle said the group were prepared to put in a lot of work beforehand. The event is known to be tough enough, but the Fire Fighters carry their gear with them during the challenge.
“We are going to do a lot of gym work,” he said.
“Obviously we are going to have to do some sort of training to simulate the stairs.”
At this stage the group were considering all options, even if that meant climbing the popular The Rock Hill reserve to get some elevation into their training.
“It (Firies Climb for MND) is 98 floors and in excess of 1500 steps, we certainly have a job to do,” Mr Takle said.
“We want to get to the top and survive,” he laughed. The goal is to raise $5000.
