A fast-start proved the difference as Riverina League got on top of Farrer League and ran away with an impressive 65-43 victory.
Farrer League prevailed the last time the two teams met so Riverina League coach Julie Cornell was thrilled to have the Cup back in their keeping.
“Last time we met, Farrer won it. So I was really, really keen to win that Cup back so we were able to do that,” Cornell said.
“I didn’t think we would win by so much but we were just a bit better on the day.”
Riverina League started like a house on fire.
They could hardly put a foot wrong early and established a 15-goal lead by quarter-time.
Farrer League were able to recover and worked themselves into the contest but ultimately, the damage was done.
Riverina’s defensive pair, vice-captain Jess Allen and Brigetta Hart, led the charge with big efforts on dangerous Farrer shooting pair Sarah Hooper and Jordan Barrett.
At the other end, Hannah Finemore was proving very hard to stop, while Liv Tilyard worked really hard to get things going in the centre court.
Cornell said her Riverina League team came to play.
“The girls were really switched on,” she said.
“They wanted to win it. We had the first centre pass, we got the first goal and I think we settled after that.
“We got a few intercepts and it came back to us and we got a quick five goals in and it took the pressure off us.”
Cornell said she could not have asked any more from her ladies.
“I was very happy. I asked the girls, I gave them heaps of instructions at the start of the game to have hands over balls and do a zone defence and they did it,” she said.
“We put so much pressure on the Farrer League and we really did get on top in that first quarter.”
For Farrer League, Ashleigh O’Leary had an outstanding game and was named her team’s best player.
Tess Hamblin won a lot of the ball through the centre court, while Jordan Barrett shot well when she got the opportunities.
Meantime, Riverina League scored an commanding win over Farrer League in the under 17 netball game earlier in the day as well.
Riverina were big winners 72-21.
Jess Conlan was best for Riverina in the win, while Ella Fellows was awarded Farrer League’s best player award.
