The 51-year-old injured driver is lucky to be alive after he lost control of his car, near Collingullie on Wednesday night. 

The man and sole occupant was flown to Canberra hospital after his car veered from Lockhart Road and into a drain, flipping several times. 

Wagga police duty officer Adrian Telfer said the man was trapped for some time before a passing truck driver stopped to help.

Paramedics, police and the members of the Volunteer Rescue Association were called to the scene, 16-kilometres south of Collingullie, after 8.40pm, where they freed and treated the 51-year-old for serious injuries. 

The man was rushed to Canberra with a fractured femur and left lower limb.

While the cause of the collision is still under investigation, Wagga police duty officer Adrian Telfer urged drivers to take care on Riverina roads. 

“There have been a number of crashes out there over the last twelve months,” Inspector Telfer said. 

“We do want to remind residents to drive to the conditions.”

Inspector Telfer applauded the truck driver’s brave actions, in pulling over to help when he came across the incident. 

“The vehicle had quite extensive damage,” he said. “He’s a good Samaritan really.”
