And in rural and regional areas there tends to be more companion animals than in city centres. The Greater Hume Shire Council rangers have just completed pet checks during the month of October.
This long-term project has gleaned plenty of insightful information about pets in the region and the accompanying regulatory paperwork that is needed.
And kudos needs to go to the shire and its rangers for the work that helps owners meet any official requirements. The reduced-price micro-chipping and vaccination advice all help companion-animal owners in some way, shape or form.
It could also be considered a positive way of encouraging responsible pet ownership in a rural and regional area.
A 2002 study conducted at the State University of New York found that pet owners experienced less stress.
Some of the benefits included:
- Lowering of blood pressure
- Reduced pain
- Lower cholesterol
- Improved mood
- An ability to socialise
- Prevents strokes
- Helps to improve immunity
- Helps children develop emotionally
To the north of Greater Hume Shire, Lockhart Shire Council has also helped to foster bonds and relationships within the community.
Any passer-by will tell you that the new cycling and walking track which leads from The Rock township to The Rock Hill Reserve is getting plenty of traffic.
And this traffic also includes plenty of locals who are taking the opportunity to walk, ride, or run with their dogs.
