A former Junee high school teacher has pleaded guilty to 22 sexual assault charges relating to seven different victims across 15 years.
A previous non-publication order has now been lifted – revealing the perpetrator as Junee’s Carl William Doherty.
Some of the incidents occurred when Doherty took children on out-of-school activities to towns in the eastern Riverina.
In Wagga Local Court on Monday, the 82-year-old pleaded guilty to 10 counts of assaulting a male and committing an act of indecency, four counts of indecently assaulting a male, seven counts of buggery and one of attempted buggery.
According to documents tendered to the court, the incidents relate to a number of occasions between 1965 and 1980.
The incidents occurred across the Riverina and surrounds.
According to the facts tendered to the court, the metal work teacher raped one 13-year-old student three times, including during a weekend trip away.
Three years later Doherty got in touch with the same victim again, indecently assaulting him during an overnight trip.
Another 13-year-old student, who was involved in a number of school-based activities with the teacher, was indecently assaulted inside his sleeping bag in the back of Doherty’s car.
Later that year the same victim was indecently assaulted and raped during a trip to Doherty’s mother’s house.
The facts state a third victim, aged 14, “freaked out” and was left in a state of shock after Doherty committed the first act of indecent assault against him in 1965.
Doherty indecently assaulted the victim on another two occasions sometime between 1965 and 1969.
The victim was raped twice during separate occasions in Doherty’s car on the side of the road and in the bush.
In 1979, a fourth victim, aged 12, was indecently assaulted on a trip to a steam engine rally, after he started spending time with Doherty during activities outside of school.
In 1980, Doherty attempted to rape the then 13-year-old on a trip to his mother’s house, leaving the victim in tears.
Another 13-year-old was indecently assaulted in 1981 on a weekend camping trip and a 12-year-old in 1971.
The seventh victim, 13, was indecently assaulted on two occasions during a shower with Doherty on school grounds.
The victim was indecently assaulted another three times in 1969.
Doherty’s solicitor, John Weir, told magistrate Erin Kennedy he would need a number of weeks to gather medical reports before the case returned to court.
Doherty will face Wagga District Court on November 17, where a date for sentence is expected to be set.
