SEPTEMBER 1 saw around 70 people gather on the southern shores of the Doodle Cooma Swamp to witness the ribbon cutting of the new bird hides. The hides are solidly built – being steel transport containers. Two of these hides are located on the southern side of the swamp. Some modifications to the vegetation to provide a better outlook have been undertaken. There are sufficient seats to accommodate nine people and the hides are definitely all weather.
A Welcome to Country ceremony was followed by a talk on the project and project partners. A second talk on the habitat, wildlife and the carbon fixing nature of the swamp concluded with Henty School students planting some 120 trees. It was especially nice to have a superb parrot detour to emphasise the value of habitat. New informative signs meet visitors entering the reserve off either Diffey’s Road or the stock route road on the eastern side of the swamp.
FRIDAY, October 20, 11am to 12.30pm: Guided Tours of Henty Public School. This is an opportunity for former students, staff and community members to come and have a look at our school. Current students and teachers will be going back in time, looking at the present, dressing up and taking part in activities.
