The 49 year-old was travelling south when the drama unfolded about 3pm.
After fleeing his cabin he phoned the fire brigade which arrived at the scene, 14 kilometres north of Holbrook, to find the prime mover aflame.
NSW Rural Fire Service superintendent Pat Westwood said 16 firefighters spent 30 to 40 minutes bringing the fire under control.
They saved the unladen trailer from damage but the prime mover was destroyed.
Two units each from Holbrook and Little Billabong were joined by one from Garryowen in tackling the blaze which halted traffic.
