Fires finally contained

The fire that has been burning through the Woomargama National Park in the past few weeks has
finally been brought under
control.
Emergency crews had continued to struggle with the blaze until the eve of Australia Day when 20 millimetres of rain came down on the fireground.
Since then NSW Rural Fire Service and National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) crews continued to monitor the fireground for ‘hot spots’.
The NPWS Rapid Aerial Response Team was deployed into the area to put out fires in inaccessible bushland.
On Thursday January 30 at 7pm, the fire was finally declared under control by the RFS Southern Border Team.
Despite hot conditions throughout the region since then, a lack of wind has meant the fires have remained under control.
“We’ve got through the real heat, so that’s the worst of it,” an RFS spokesperson said.
“Both fires (Carabost and Woomargama) still have hot spots and if we are going to have trouble it will be because of the wind and those hot spots.
“But we’re more than confident at this stage that we will be able to keep it at patrol status.”
