The rural township, which is in close proximity to major highways and thoroughfares, welcomed the addition of a new phone tower.
Member for Farrer Sussan Ley was at Burrumbuttock on Friday and said it was terrific to hear the feedback from people in the town.
“I called into the shop and the pub and it was great to hear what people had to say,” she said.
Initially the funds to build the tower were pledged some two and a half years ago.
“This really is going to transform a small town and it is good for travellers,” Mrs Ley told the Eastern Riverina Chronicle.
She said the local school at Burrumbuttock was attended by 30 pupils and the news was good for them too.
“This will really strengthen the community.”
The new mobile base station delivers Telstra’s 3G and state-of-the-art 4GX* mobile data service.
Ms Ley said Burrumbuttock was among 577 new Telstra black spot sites across the country aimed at improving mobile phone and broadband communications outside of the capital cities”.
“Further Telstra towers at Merriwagga, north of Griffith, and Wanganella, north of Deniliquin, will go live in the next month, with a site at Niemur, south of Moulamein, due for completion in February.”
“I am also delighted to note a long-awaited tower at Savernake will be operational by January, with Lowesdale following soon after.”
“This is a significant moment for the community of Burrumbuttock who join more than 250 locations across Australia who are now benefiting from more mobile coverage through Telstra’s delivery of the Mobile Black Spot Program,” Telstra Area general manager Steve Tinker said.
To the north of the area Ross Edwards, who farms at Yerong Creek, has expressed concern about lack of mobile coverage in the region.
Mr Edwards said there were ideal spots to put a mobile tower within the region. This would help to sure up service on the Olympic Highway at Yerong Creek.
