The Giants announced on Monday that Schneider will replace Brad Miller as the club’s North Eastern Australian Football League (NEAFL) coach next year.
Schneider, an Osborne product, retired from AFL football at the end of the 2015 season after 228 games and a premiership with Sydney in 2005.
He spent the past two seasons with Victorian Amateur Football Association (VAFA) club Beaumaris. They won the B grade premiership last year, before Schneider took on the coaching job in A grade this season.
Schneider held a couple of different business positions since retirement before deciding on a return to AFL football.
“Coaching is always something I’ve had ambitions for,” Schneider said.
“I coached Beaumaris in A grade this year and it was a good experience and I had a ball.
“This came about really quickly.”
Schneider had an informal meeting with the Giants in Melbourne last month, and within a fortnight had accepted a position as NEAFL coach.
“We had a quick chat and catch up in Melbourne,” he said.
“I flew up for an interview on the Monday after and then the Thursday night they rang and offered me the job.
“I can’t wait to get into it.”
The Giants won the NEAFL premiership in 2016 before crashing to finish wooden spooners this year, as the club’s long injury list took a toll.
Schneider is looking forward to taking on the role, and particularly working with the talent in the Giants academies.
“I am excited. The Giants are looking really good and the kids in the Academy coming through also makes it very appealing,” he said.
“It’s great being back in footy and it’s something I feel comfortable doing.”
Schneider, his wife Nikkita, and their three children, Koby, Maya, and Beau will make the move to Sydney soon, 10 years after leaving for Melbourne when he was traded from the Swans to St Kilda.
“I’ve good a few good mates coaching at the Giants in Lenny Hayes, Mark McVeigh and Amon Buchanan, and it’s a very young coaching group,” Schneider said.
“We’ve been in Sydney before and my wife has a bit of family there so it’s good.
“It’s a new challenge and I’m looking forward to it.”
