The branch has been pushing for the change for the past two years, winning the support of the NSW Liberal Party state council.
Now it also has a petition officially listed with the Parliament.
“The Corowa Branch of the Liberal Party of New South Wales seeks to draw the attention of the House to the anomaly of the Federal Parliamentary election cycle of three years when most Australian state, territory and country election cycles are longer,” the petition states.
“We therefore ask the house to hold a referendum to extend the term of the Federal Parliament to a fixed four years.”
Farrer MP Sussan Ley cannot sign the petition herself, as a member of parliament, but has backed the plan and shared the petition on her social media pages.
“It simply aligns with the states and allows governments more time outside the political cycles to implement their election commitments,” she told The Border Mail in June.
