The water tower will have a similar look to some of the painted silos which have become so popular throughout Victoria and parts of NSW.
Lockhart Shire Council tourism and development officer Jennifer Connor said it was expected work on the project would start next year.
“Painting the water tower is something the community has been interested in for some time,” she said.
The Lockhart Shire Council and Lockhart Progress Association have been working on the possibility for almost a year.
Mrs Connor said funding had always been the issue, however, the incredible success of the Victorian Silo Art Trail has seen an increase in funding support for this form of public art.
“Riverina Water County Council, who own the tower, have been very supportive of the project, their only requirement being that the mural retained a water theme,” she said.
An aim of the project that was, while fitting in with the growing silo art trail, the mural does not imitate existing works.
Mrs Connor said it needed to be a standout piece in its own right.
Lockhart Progress Association vice president and member of the Tourism and Economic Development Steering Committee, Myra Jenkyn proposed the concept of a waterfall flowing down the tower and edged by gum trees.
“The concept signifies the vital importance of water to all those who live here and also promotes our great natural assets to attract visitors,” Mrs Connor said.
The project will request expressions of interest from suitable artists.
And Lockhart Shire Council, Riverina Water and Lockhart Progress Association will be involved in the process.
