My original goal that prompted me to run is simply to fix the recycling support in the Shire. According to the Shire's website they are very committed to halving waste yet when I turn up to a transfer station with my carefully sorted rubbish there isn't enough space to recycle and it all ends up in the gargabe skip.
Since deciding to run my goals have grown. I'd like to see a transparent and public audit completed of our roads and a 5 year maintenance plan published for consultation. I'd also like more transparency on the distribution of rates between the wards. I'm also hearing that peoductivity and diversified income is an area that the Council could support in some way.
Key areas that need attention:
I think for our Shire some of the biggest issues are managing efficiently without the scale of some of the bigger Councils, and in hearing what the priorities really are for our community. It's their money we are spending so let's make sure it's spent on their future. Efficiency, transparency, innovative forward planning and a focus on community- this is what I'm hearing is important.
Tony Quinn, Gerogery
Goals if elected:
To see the council does a job once and does it properly and doesnt waste money.
Key areas that need attention:
Rural roads are shocking and every rate payer – particulary people who pay big rates are entitlted to some road surface. I’ll be pushing that hard.
Stuart Heriot, Morven
Goals if elected: Ongoing repairs and maintenance to our extensive roads network.
Key areas that need attention: Continue to support and consult with residents to make our shire continually progressive and sustainable.
Bruce Quick, Holbrook
Goals if elected:
As a councillor in the East ward, representing the electors of Holbrook and surrounds, my goals are to ensure the ratepayers of the area are adequately represented and achieve good value for rates and charges paid.
Key areas that need attention:
The freeay bypass has had an effect on the township of Holbrook, I feel that Holbrook needs to move forward and become a destination, rather than a place to travel “ through”.
With the right plan, Holbrook can become village with shops and services that offers a quiet palce to shop and visit. I would offer fresh ideas to council to further these aims.
Heather Wilton, Holbrook
Goals if elected:
To continue to provide active and quality representation to all residents of the East Ward and Holbrook, and also to those who live across the shire. A councillor is elected to represent a ward in GHSC, but must also embrace/consider the whole of the shire in decision making. Continue to ensure that GHSC is a sustainable and viable shire, and to ensure that GHSC is a great place in which to work, live and play, by encouraging and attracting new business opportunities. Jobs are the key to our future!
Key areas that need attention:
To continue to lobby for funding for the construction of the heavy vehicle crossing north of Henty and to begin planning, design and funding for flooding and storm water improvements in our main towns. And finally, to ensure that our road networks continue to receive adequate funds from council's budgets.
North Ward
Doug Meyer, Henty
Goals if elected:
In his personal goals for Henty, of which he is a third generation farmer, and the North Ward he has always put his community first, he is an active contributor and a true local mentor.
If elected, his goals for the next four years are as follows. To complete the rebuild of Henty swimming pool, including the new facilities complex, that will cater for both the Pool and adjoining tennis complex.
Key areas that need attention:
Ensure the start of the new Streetscape in Sladen Street is completed on budget and within time frames and most importantly to continue to pursue the relocation of the northern railcrossing further north to enable easier heavy vehicle access to the Grain Corp Facility.
This will take heavy vehicles out of the Henty main street making it safer for local shoppers, the aged and children.
Its now time to get things done in the real local sense!
Annette Schilg, Walbundrie
Goals if elected:
To continue to be a committed councilor representing locals at a local level. Maining quality roads and safe roads across the shire, make sure we keep up the standard.
Health and wellbeing of all residents of all ages across the shire, including the services we provide including the upkeep of playgrounds and keeping young ones entertained. In planning keep in mind older people with signage and footpaths so they can safely get around communities.
Continue to work towards uniting the Greater Hume to work as one.
Key areas that need attention:
There are a couple of projects I’d like to see through, the extra heavy vehicle crossing north of Henty, that’s been a long haul with works in progress.
Seeing through the project which will create a safer area for trucks to stop in Walbundrie, south of the bridge, with basic facilities.
Terry Weston, Culcairn
Goals if elected:
To be able to work co-operatively with other members of Council.
To be an active, supportive and listening Councillor for the people of Culcairn, North Ward and Greater Hume Shire.
Key areas that need attention:
I think roads are always a key issue along with setting rates across the Shire.
The Communities, facilities and services need continuous attention in line with population growth.
Jenni Turner, Culcairn
Goals if elected:
My goal if elected is to provide independent, fair, well thought through and objective council. I seek to use my vote wisely -with the benefit of the shire as a whole, front and centre in my focus.
I want to be part of a 'can do' council that supports people in their plans to grow their businesses and shared infrastructure.
Key areas that need attention:
The key areas that have been identified by the community as needing the most attention are our roads, our kids, business development opportunities and waste management.
I would like to improve our facilities for the processing of recycling and green waste and am pro council investment in renewable energy sources. I would like to support moves made, through smart design, to improve the livability of our towns and attract more industry and its flow on wealth.
Peter Knight, Henty
A former “city boy” who has family around the region and his mother was born in Henty.
Goals if elected:
Looking to get some equity back into the system. Equity for the farmers and the people who live in the little villages around the place.
Support youth to get employment in the region. I can offer commitment. I’m retired and I’ve got time to get involved with the community.
Key areas that need attention:
Because I am a newcomer I’m happy to meet with people and discuss what people thing are wrong and need fixing.
Roads are going to be a big problem that need fixing after all the rain.
South Ward
Denise Osborne, Jindera
Goals if elected:
Would like to see the new council interrogate the council survey and look at positive and negatives of our performance and make a change to improve. When asking for people's opinion best way is to incorporate them into the plan for the future.
Key areas that need attention:
To ensure communication is always there, deal with infrastructure, roads or buildings, doing our best to keep pace. Roads are an ongoing issue. We have to be open to people’s suggestions.
Karen Schoff, Culcairn
Goals if elected:
To be voice for the smaller towns and rural population. I want every decision we make to be made for the next generation not for the next election.
Key areas that need attention:
Really want each town to grow. Each town in shire needs to grow. If we want to continually be fit for the future we need to make good decisions for all our towns, villages and the rural sector.
Matt Hicks, Jindera
Goals if elected:
I’d like to see council a little bit more careful with how they spend money and a bit more accountable for where they spend it. That way ratepayers will get value for money for their rates and I think they also need to try and improve communication with ratepayers.
Key areas that need attention:
Town planning should be focused on to ensure new developments won’t be putting a huge burden on existing infrastructure.
Try to encourage more population growth within the shire which will give the shire more money and be able to spread things around more fairly.
Jenny O’Neill, Jindera
Goals if elected: To see completed projects which are in the pipeline, such as the Henty Railway crossing, the Jindera Multiservice outlet and the Flood Management studies throughout the Shire
Key areas that need attention:
A review of our current rating system which will be guided by the IPART report of the local government rating system.
Continued improvement of the standard of the road system and building economic and tourism opportunities in the Shire.
