The break in happened at the home of a Greens volunteer. The car was parked in the driveway and contained important 'how to vote' cards, which political parties provide to voters at pre-poll and on election day. They found boxes of the cards torn up and strewn across the street.
Farrer Greens spokesman Geoff Hudson said the incident had shocked him and their local members.
“Robust political debate is one thing, a break-in on the driveway of a private house and the destruction of materials is another,” he said.
“We are re-assessing our safety and the safety of our candidate.
“One thing we are certain of is that we will have our ‘how to votes’ reprinted and we will continue to campaign publicly just as we have been doing up until now. We will not be silenced.”
The home of the volunteer reportedly had campaign signs torn down in the past two weeks and it is believed the two incidents may be connected.
Greens candidate for Farrer, Dr Amanda Cohn, was travelling to Melbourne to sit a medical exam on Monday morning and said sabotaging an election campaign is “unacceptably undemocratic and unAustralian”.
“I have always welcomed open debate on policy issues where constituents may disagree with me,” Dr Cohn said.
“I've been openly campaigning in markets, busy streets and even pubs, and have put myself out there to face tough questions.
“Our volunteers are at pre-polling booths across the electorate today exercising their democratic rights and should not have to fear for their personal safety.
“We will be speaking with all Farrer candidates to ask for their solidarity against vandalism and violence in this campaign.”
Mr Hudson said the Greens would issue a statement calling for all candidates in Farrer to support their call for a fair election campaign and to speak out against intimidation and violence.
