The project was due to start at the end of February but the Holbrook Submarine Museum hasn’t seen a cent of the promised $32,450. 

Awarded under the Anzac Centenary grants scheme the money was to go towards a replica of the AE2 submarine being built in Submarine Park. 

Luckily due to the scale of the project it wasn’t planned to be completed by Anzac Day this year. 

Museum curator, Roger Cooper, worked on the grant application for weeks and even longer planning the project. 

The replica will be built 85 per cent to scale of the real AE2 which is currently sitting at the bottom of the ocean. 

Mr Cooper was even able to purchase the middle section including conning tower of the AE2 from Geelong. 

The section was used for a team of Australian and Turkish divers who surveyed the wreck of the AE2.

Although the funding stall from the Government has been an issue the community is still backing the project. 

Since the grant was awarded several groups have donated money including the Holbrook RSL, Submarine Association Australia and the Holbrook Probus Club.

The AE2 is a fitting addition to the park to compare the HMAS Otway to an older submarine. 

The HMAS AE2 captain Lieutenant Commander Henry Hugh Gordon “Dacre” Stoker, was close friends with Commander Holbrook.

The replica will be seven metres long and around six metres high, built at 85 percent scale to the real AE2 which is sitting at the bottom of the Sea of Marmara.

This project will keep the submariner spirit alive in Holbrook following the yellow submarine effort last year.

The HMAS Otway was covered in yellow knitting to celebrate 50 years since The Beatles visited Australia.

According to Susan Ley’s office the funding stall was due to incorrect paperwork and all funds should be in the account this week.
