Some thrilling sets of tennis were played in section one on Saturday. In the Barrandana White versus YC Ryan Match, the Whites led by 4 in the men’s sets. Whites increased the lead to eight games going in to the mixd but YC Ryan won the first three mixed sets 18 games to six to lead by four games with one set to play. Whites won this set 6-2 and the match ended in a draw each winning eight sets. Result 8/75 each.
Almost a similar situation occurred when Burrandana Blue clashed with The Rock. Trailing by two games after six men’s sets, The Burra ladies picked up 10 leading 60/52 with four sets remaining. But The Rock stormed home to win all four mixed sets and clinch a two game win: 76/74.
Mangoplah, particularly through their ladies who won 36/10 and then contributed a 24/12 lead in the mixed, were untroubled to overcome an improving Kooringal side: 93/49.
Morven, the only unbeaten team in section 2 clung on to defeat Mangoplah. It was the Morven men who led by 12 games and by just losing one game in the ladies and six in the mixed, won by five. Result 79/74.
The new team in section 2 based in Mangoplah and known as the Goannas gained 10 games in their men’s set against a gallant Pleasant Hills led by David Male who enjoyed his best day of tennis in recent years.
The Hills ladies picked up three games and the mixed were 16/16. Result: 70/63.
It will be some weeks yet before a trend is established to see if any team will challenge Glenara for favourites in section 4. Early indications point to the two Lockhart teams who had big wins this week.
Results section 4: Lockhart Blue defeated Mangoplah 77/19; Lockhart Red defeated YC White 72/24; Glenara defeated YC Blue 71/25.
