The new courts at the Henty Park Tennis Club were officially opened last week by Member for Albury, Greg Aplin MP.
The project that gave the tennis club eight new synthetic courts are the result of lots of fundraising and hardwork by the Henty Park Tennis Club Committee.
Completion of the new courts was a $200,000 project with input from local businesses, Greater Hume Shire Council, Henty Community Bank and a grant from the Department of Sport Recreation and Racing.
Member for Albury, Greg Aplin MP was in Henty to officially open the tennis courts on Friday and said that he admires Henty as a “can-do community”.
“Through community involvement and work, along with businesses, council and government support the Henty Park Tennis Club moved forward confidently,” he said.
“The courts look a picture. They will be a great asset to the town not only for sport, education and exercise but you will be able to stage some great events,” he added.
President of the Henty Park Tennis Club Committee, James Male, recognised all those who have contributed to the club in recent history. He specifically thanked the businesses that helped sponsor the upgrade of the courts and all those members of the Henty community who donated their time and labour.
Mr Male also recognised the ‘can do’ attitude in the Henty community and gave certificated of appreciation to many businesses, individuals and groups that contributed to the club.
Mr Male said, I am very proud of what we have been able to achieve and what has been done.
“This club has a great history in Henty since 1946,” he said, “We are taking it to the next level and continutung the legacy.”
June Shanahan who remembers the Henty tennis courts from her youth and is the sister of famous Australian tennis player Margaret Court said that the upgrade of the court was a great thing for the town and would hopefully attract more people to the competition in Henty.
“How times have changed since I spent my school holdidays here,” she said.
“It is quite an achievement to go from a hard court to synthetic.”
