Outstanding horsemanship

20 Jan, 2010 06:11 AM
Holbrook Pony Clubbers excelled in all areas of horsemanship at the Zone 20 Pony Club Camp held at Tumbarumba.

Riders had the opportunity to participate in dressage, show jumping, cross country, tent pegging, campdraft, team penning, polocrosse, sporting events and the stockman’s challenge.

James Papworth was awarded the Rita and Kath Ferry Memorial Shield for overall achievement.

James joined a number of local riders including Jodie Ross, Ness Taylor, and Randal Taylor who received badges for representing their club and zone at state level.

The Stockman’s challenge was the talking point of the camp this year.

A challenge was made by the boys from the mountains that the stockman’s challenge won’t be going to the lower country next year.

But the Holbrook Pony Club team of Valentine Ross, Jodie Ross, Dev Carmen and Jane Scobie gained first place with a score of 420.

The nearest was Tumut 1 with 416 and Tumut 2 with 401.

Valentine Ross had the highest individual score (120) in the men and Jodie Ross the highest in the ladies with 90.

The tent pegging team of Holbrook’s Dev Carman, Steve Roe, Derek Ballard and Michael Roe were the winners. Valentine Ross, Jodie Ross, Matthew Peel and Sam Webb came in third.

It was a great opportunity for the young riders.

Holbrook Pony Club spokesman Janette Ross said thanks to the dedication of the parent who helped set up and pack up the gear for the week long camp. Their assistance to organise the drinks for the children and distribute the hay and chaff for the horses was greatly appreciated.
