Mathew and Rachel Hansel are two rising local stars that are pursuing a sport you might not expect - Lawn Bowls - and are excelling at it.
They got their love of lawn bowls from their parents who used to take them along to social bowls on Sundays at the Culcairn Bowling club.
“Culcairn Bowling Club supports them very well,” said proud mother Sue Hansel.
Both Mat and Rachel are in the 2012 NSW under 18 state lawn bowls squad and Mat recently competed in Illawarra in the Junior South Pacific Tournament.
He made it to the semi finals in the singles tournament and was beaten by one shot in the finals of the pair tournament.
Mat and his team-mate Josh Annetts from Tumut played 21 ends with a draw at 21 all forcing them to play a further two ends before the winner was decided.
Mat and his sister Rachel are both in the Southern Sports academy and are up for zone selection.
Late last year Matt’s sporting achievements were recognised when he was one of 23 athletes across the Riverina to receive a sporting Blues award.
