Henty Section One’s golden run continued with the side etching their name in the history books by performing on the biggest stage of all accounting for Burrumbuttock at Jindera in Grand Final action.
The Henty men made a solid start in soaring heat and showed plenty of improvement from the semi-final performance. Nat Stroh’s return from illness played a big hand in the side’s fortunes and struck Brad Schulz in blistering form. The pair exchanged blows with flawless rallies in front of a capacity crowd. Captain Burger easily accounted for Maurie Tynan while Snail Male found little solace in Ash Linder. Timmy Willis squared off with ex-Henty player Brent Piltz as the men went down by 2 games.
The Henty women proved a class above although Burrum played a card with Tracey Elhers returning to the line-up. Megan Eulenstein led superbly with consistent touch while Tracey Oakman felt the wrath in three sets. Alysa Savill returned in style with the teenage sensation proving more than a handful for Judy Seeley. Sally Guise continued to dominate opposed to Elhers while Ruth Eulenstein had an enjoyable battle with Meryl Linder.
The Henty women were the front runners leading by a whopping 21 games and provided some breathing space of 19 games going into the mixed. The mixed sets lived up to an equally high standard with the conditions doing little to halt the performance of both sides.
Henty held on for a 13th consecutive victory12 sets 79 games to Burrum 4 sets 58 games. The side gained the honour of lifting the Thomas Chubb perpetual trophy for the Hume Country Tennis Association’s Section 1 premiers in 2007/08.
A big thanks must go to all committee members who faced the challenge of moving from Farrer to the Hume with dedication and hard work. We look forward in continuing to foster our strong junior base and building a successful club moving forward.
