Culcairn recorded its fourth premiership in the last five years with a hard fought victory over Holbrook in last w/ends Holbrook and DCA grand final at Culcairn.
The Lions led by skipper Steven Brand successfully chased down Holbrook’s day one total of 155, losing five wickets in the chase and with ten overs to spare.
Holbrook after winning the toss and batting wasted an excellent start to lose momentum and post a under par score, that proved well short of setting the Lions a difficult run chase.
The Brookers openers Ben Weckert (14) and Alex Ross (45) made a sound start and with Captain Seamus McKillop in great touch were heading for a large total at 3/119 just prior to the tea break.
However when McKillop (40) smashed a pull shot to straight to the square leg fieldsman in started a collapse that turned the whole direction of the match.
Two more wickets in successive balls from Dusty Wild in the last over before tea and a wicket to Brad Ravenna in the first over after tea saw Holbrook slump to 7/121.
Kelvin Winkler (21) boosted the lower order, but the damage continued with Holbrook bowled out in the sixty second over, leaving Culcairn three overs to bat before stumps which they did without drama.
All the Lions bowlers bowled with great economy and control, with Dai Jenkins 3/30 and Wild 3/24 the leading wicket takers. Ravenna 2/44 and Murray Watson 1/45 added great support.
Resuming at 0/3 Culcairn got away to a terrible start on Sunday with Wild and star bat Grant Kohlhagen both falling quickly to Steve Taylor leaving them in trouble at 2/7.
Steve Brand and opener Brent barber slowly but surely turned things around with an excellent stand of sixty seven, before Barber fell LBW to Ross for (19).
The bad news for Holbrook was that this brought the experience of David badger to the crease and as he has done many times in the past steadied the ship and provided Brand with great support.
Just when Brand looked to be on his way to a large score he played across the line of a Weckert off spinner and was out for an excellent (65) and put his side in a winning position.
Ravenna (17) chipped in with handy runs before Taylor dismissed him with just eleven runs needed. New bat Nathan Healy overcame a nervous start to hit two boundaries and secure the Lions a well deserved flag.
Again for Holbrook its two young opening bowlers Taylor and Nathan Morton were outstanding with Taylor picking up three wickets in three fiery spells of pace bowling.
Brand was awarded the umpires man of the match award for his vital innings that went a long way to winning the match. Officiating umpires were Andrew Rainbird and Todd Hannam from TRYC.
