WALBUNDRIE SET FOR FINALS ACTION

27 Aug, 2008 07:16 AM
The 2008 Hume league finals series will commence this weekend with two elimination finals set down for Saturday and Sunday at the Walbundrie Showground.

Saturday will see glamour team Jindera (3rd) play Lockhart (6th) in a repeat of last weeks final home and away round, which saw Jindera win easily by 80 points.

Sunday action will see traditional strong teams Holbrook (4th) and Howlong (5th) clash. Howlong were comfortable ten goal winners only a fortnight ago and will start firm favorites.

Last years grand finalist Culcairn (1st) and Osborne (2nd) will have the first week off, before contesting the second semi final in week two of the finals.

Howlong warmed up for its clash against the Brookers by defeating Henty, while Holbrook had a bye. The week off for Holbrook was much needed with a long injury list plaguing its progress.

Around The Traps

# Culcairn defender Luke Schuberg capped off another consistent season by taking out a hotly contested best and fairest count last Saturday night. Schuberg who was runner up last year finished with 46 votes to just finish clear of utility Clint Brown (41) and classy midfielder Shannon Gilson on (40). Luke Donan and Marcus Gostellow finished fourth and fifth.

# Holbrook Coach Manny Edmunds completed a superb season by claiming the Brookers top honor. Edmunds trailed gun forward Tom Hickey going into the final round against Howlong, but a best a field performance saw him tip out Hickey with 51 votes to Hickey 45. Back man Hayden Lanyon finished third on 43 despite missing five matches. Jon Thompson and Aaron West were next in line.

# Henty best and fairest deservingly went to its two leaders Coach Adam Wiseman and his assistant Andrew Wilson. The dynamic duo tied for first place in a fitting finale to a testing season for the pair and the Swampies. Both Wiseman and Wilson have resigned for next year as the Swampies look to improve on a tough 2008 season.
