OSBORNE DENT SWAMPIES FINALS HOPES

07 Jul, 2010 08:16 AM
Osborne has gone a long way to securing a finals berth in the 2010 Hume finals, by out pointing Henty in a tight encounter at Osborne by 15 points.

The build up to the game surrounded around the winner holding an edge for finals and the match reflected that with plenty of pressure from both sides after Osborne led by coach Corey Munson started well.

Munson was at his dangerous best kicking the first four goals of the match to have the Swampies defence in tatters. Munson also spent time on the ball and finished with five goals to be best on field.

Henty showed great fight to come back from a slow start and found themselves only four points behind at the last change, before Osborne led by Adam and Owen Gooden regained the ascendancy.

The loss has made things tough for Henty who will face tough matches against Howlong and BB Saints following this week’s general bye.

The remainder of the round witnessed several heavy defeats with the top three Howlong, Culcairn and Jindera all being untroubled with Culcairn being hardest pushed by Murray Magpies.

Culcairn’s 47 point win over Murray Magpies continues the Magpies fall from grace, with their finals hopes now all but finished after having won its first six matches.

Lion’s veteran Brent Barber was outstanding, recapturing his Azzi Medal winning form from past years. The Lions remain in second position, but have the lowest percentage of the top four teams.

Angus MacDiarmid, Ben Schulz, Leigh Baker and Graeme Fruean dominated throughout in the midfield, while Hayden Coulson, Bev Charlton-White and Luke Donan kicked three goals apiece.

Holbrook produced a polished second half at Urana to claim only its second win for the season. Both Billabong Crows and Holbrook were level at half time 7-6 apiece.

However with James Breen almost unstoppable the Brookers stormed home to record a 53 point win. Breen finished with a career high nine goals. Martin Semmler and Mitch Palmer were excellent performers.

The return of last years Best and Fairest winner Nathan Hall to the side and the expected return of Aaron Baker next round should ensure Holbrook become a dangerous force in the run home.

Walla despite being beaten by 95 points against Howlong showed some promising signs and its effort to kick ten goals for the game indicated this. Aaron Barnes kicked five goals for Howlong.

RW Tigers consolidated its spot in the top six; with a comfortable 103 point win over the struggling CDHBU, with Josh Morris, Brandon Matthews and Jesse Corrigan - Dale all booting four goals.

The Tigers have a huge challenge ahead of them in the next round, when they take on BB Saints at Brocklesby, with a win almost guaranteeing them a finals finish.

RW Tigers will also have to curb a disturbing trend of fifty meter penalties the side continues to give away, with its tally of nine in a huge winning margin last week concerning insiders.

The Saints were easy winners over Lockhart, running out 88 point winners and keeping alive an outside chance of a top two finish. Michael Klein - Boonschate kicked five goals for the Saints. Jeremy and Thomas Alexander were best for the Demons, who struggled to find a winning forward despite a good share of possession, they were also plagued by inaccuracy.

Jindera made a long, but successful trip to the MIA, when they defeated Coleambally by 52 points, with the home side’s slow start thwarting any chance of an upset. Trent Castles returned to form with six goals, while Brett Garland, Kirk Wilson and Damien Cassidy starred. Brad Preston chipped in with three goals.
