The Hume football league has pulled off a real coup with AFL legend Kevin Sheedy coming to the Hume league Gala day to be held at Walbundrie Football Ground on August 10th.
Sheedy will help the league celebrate 75 years of Hume football as the AFL celebrates 150 years. The day will commence at 11.00am and features several other events.
The Gala day will also culminate the “Kicking Goals for Mental Health” which has been running in collaboration with Greater Southern Area Health Service and other agencies.
There will be feature presentations to ‘Hume Football League Heroes’ (significant contributors from the leagues history) involving players from the Hume league clubs who have reached game milestones. Also on the agenda is the launch of the leagues own songs, “A League of Their Own’ and “A New Day”, written to commemorate the league and the “Kicking Goals” projects.
Hume League President Merv Wegener says the day is being aimed at the families and communities in the league and a chance to celebrate some terrific achievements by the league and individuals. (Continued page 10)
BIG GAMES TURN INTO FIZZERS
Round 16 of the Hume football league has seen the race for the flag virtually reduced to three contenders following a couple of big defeats to Holbrook and Howlong.
Culcairn, Osborne and Jindera all had commanding victories with these three sides set to fight out the top two places and the double chance in finals.
Culcairn look set to finish as minor premiers while Jindera and Osborne are set for a final four round race with percentages as to who grabs second place.
Osborne currently holds a 16% advantage over the Bulldogs. Both teams recorded large wins over fellow finals contenders Holbrook and Howlong last Saturday.
Osborne had too much class and depth for Holbrook, who hung on gamely for three quarters before an Osborne avalanche in the last twenty minutes saw them kick nine unanswered goals to win by 93 points.
Hayden Gleeson in the ruck was magnificent all day, while Owen Gooden (5 goals) and Brother Adam played blinding games to set the midfield alight.
Matt Gleeson, Luke Heyme and youngster Djali Bloomfield were others to star in a very impressive performance by last years runners up.
Holbrook who again were undermanned with its long injury list, showed plenty of fight to be competitive for the first three quarters. Hayden Lanyon and Manny Edmunds were their best.
Apart from Coach Graham Hart out with an injured hamstring, the Cats were at full strength and looked very hungry and in ominous form leading into the finals.
