MCG glory for Paige Mathewson

08 Feb, 2012 07:49 AM
Holbrook cricketer Paige Mathewson completed every cricketers dream by not only playing on the MCG, but winning a state title there last month.

Mathewson was captain of the North East Knights Girls cricket team that won the Victorian under 18 state championship in a thrilling finish on the hallowed turf of the MCG.

The Knights defeated metropolitan side the Western Spirit by just two runs in a gripping finish. North East Knights batted first and made 8/97 in the T20 final.

Spirit needed seven runs off the final over, but fell short due to some brilliant bowling and superb captaincy shown by Mathewson.

The team won the chance to play off in the final at the MCG, by winning all four preliminary rounds in the December carnival played in Melbourne.

Paige and the team were presented with their winning medallions and Cup, by Cricket Victoria CEO and former test fast bowler Tony Dodemaide.
