Henty overcame a middle order batting collapse to eventually record an easy win over Culcairn in the opening round of the HDCA 2009/10 season at Culcairn. The Swampies resumed at 1/24 chasing the small Lions total of 138. Grant Gardiner (34) and Al Edis (26) both started well but were dismissed after looking set. Grant Forest also fell for (27).
Henty suddenly found trouble when they slumped from a comfortable 2/83 to be 6/107 and still thirty runs to be scored for a win. Simon McLeish did the damage for Culcairn claiming four wickets. The lower order led by Greg Schuller (34), Shan Terlich (26) and Jack McCallum (42no) guided the Swampies to a handy first up win being finally bowled out for 220.
McLeish toiled hard for his wickets off twenty two overs, while Steve Brand and Brad Ravenna both bowled tidy spells and kept the scoring to a minimum. Holbrook gained maximum points without a ball being bowled when Osborne were forced to forfeit its opening match at Holbrook in a disappointing start to the season.
Holbrook Colts fought back gallantly against TRYC to avoid an outright loss and in the finish settled for a credible first innings loss to the defending premiers at The Rock.
TRYC after compiling 7/251 on day one had the Colts 8/71 early on day two before some late order resistance by Stewart Williams (26), Will Heriot (16no) and Ben Jones saw them delay TRYC. They were eventually bowled out for 104, with Chris Jackson backing up his ninety three runs on day one with five wickets, as TRYC skipper Jeremy Bunn asked Holbrook to follow on.
The Colts looked in serious trouble at 3/9, before an unbeaten one hundred and ten wicket stand between Matt Fairall (74no) and debutant Sam Joyce (37no) saved the day for the Colts. Both played with great composure and craft. Fairall who has not played Division one cricket for almost a decade carved out his highest score. Joyce who bowled impressively last week completed a great debut.
