Forest century in Henty win

04 Nov, 2009 07:22 AM
Star left handed batsmen Grant Forest led Henty to a convincing win over last years premiers TRYC, with a blazing century that helped the Swampies to a imposing total of 6/241 off forty overs.

Forest played shots all over the ground and his (109) formed the bulk of a one hundred and sixty four runs stand between himself and Captain Al Edis (62) after the TRYC had claimed two early wickets.

Toddy Hannam was the pick of the TRYC attack with 3/33. The Blues badly missed star all rounder Chris Jackson. Shannon Terlich chipped in with a quick fire (26) to round off the Henty innings.

In reply the combine gave a good account and finished with 9/175 with veteran middle order batsman Keith Jolliffe blasting his way to (64). Jeremy Bunn (38) and Ray Hall (22) both helped out.

Terlich completed a good double by claiming three wickets with his leg spin, while Chris Manns bowled superbly in his opening spell taking 1/13 off just eight overs.

Henty have made a great start to the season with good wins over last year’s grand finalist TRYC and Culcairn and look like they will be the team to beat come mid March.

COLTS GET FIRST WIN OVER HOLBROOK

Holbrook Colts caused a major boil over when they toppled Holbrook in round two of HDCA cricket at Holbrook, winning comfortably by 51 runs. Batting first Colts led by handy scores from Michael Stokes (29), Simon Montague (23) and Matt Fairall (15) made a handy 9/143 on a slow Holbrook outfield.

Hayden Webb with 0/13 off eight overs was very tight, while veteran Michael Wishart with 3/9 and Andrew Mackinlay 1/21 bowled well late in the innings.

The Holbrook run chase never got going and when skipper Harry McKillop was run out and Jason Weaven departing early they collapsed there after to be 8/55. Only Hayden Wishart with (38) and McKillop (22) made worthwhile scores. Wishart was last man out and it was only a thirty six run stand for the ninth wicket that added respectability to the score.

Rob Martin with 3/14 off eight overs was outstanding and led the Colts attack, along with Stu Williams 2/9.

The victory replicated a similar result twenty nine years ago.

COOPER LEADS

CULCAIRN TO WIN

A fine all round performance by Culcairn’s Jamie Cooper set the scene for Culcairn to record it first win of the season over Osborne at Osborne in round two of HDCA.

Batting first the Lions racked up 8/200 with Cooper top scoring with a fine innings of (70). Cooper who played mainly Division two last year looks to be a great acquisition to the Lions hopes. Steve Brand chipped in with (33), while young Travis King who represented the Murray Cricket Council earlier this year made a very handy (24).

Dan Smith with 3/8 and Howard 2/25 were the most successful bowlers. In reply Osborne compiled 6/147, with Howard capping off a good game by making an unbeaten (76). Ben Terlich with (32) was impressive. Culcairn skipper Brad Ravenna claimed two wickets, while Cooper replicated the similar performance of Howard by grabbing two wickets as well.
