 CULCAIRN WIN ON WASHOUT

CULCAIRN WIN ON WASHOUT

10 Mar, 2010 06:29 AM
Culcairn have won the right to play Henty in this weekends Holbrook and District Cricket grand final, following a rain affected drawn match against Holbrook at Culcairn.

Play on day two was abandoned after two inches of rain fell leaving the outfield and wicket area waterlogged. This was a disappointing finish to a very evenly poised match after day one.

Culcairn after a good start were restricted to a total of 175 off its seventy overs, with Steven Brand again the shining light for Culcairn with (80).

Such was Brand’s dominance at the crease, when he lost his wicket to Mitch Williams he had made eighty runs out of a team total of ninety six to give Culcairn a good start on a slow outfield.

The Lions looked set to top two hundred and at 3/131 were in a terrific position to set the Brookers a large run chase on day two to win the match.

The introduction into the bowling attack of Aaron Pitson and Robbie Mackinlay proved telling with the experienced pair drying up the runs and claiming vital wickets along the way.

Pitson with 4/34 off 15 overs and Mackinlay a miserly 3/13 off 16 overs left the Lions crawling to a final total of 175 and with plenty of work to do on Sunday.

However tomorrow never came for both sides with heavy rain robbing supporters of both sides a thrilling finish. The Lions go through to the grand final against Henty due to a higher placing on the ladder.

Culcairn 175 (S Brand 80, J Hodges 22, D Badger 13, R Yensch 13no; A Pitson 4/34, R Mackinlay 3/13) def Holbrook due to washout and match drawn.

DOUBLE TON TO

WINKLER IN DIV 2

Holbrook have stormed into this Saturdays Division two grand final against Uranquinty courtesy of an amazing batting feat by Kelvin Winkler that re wrote the record books.

Winkler blazed a superb innings of 209, which included thirty boundaries and eight sixes as he tore apart the Lockhart attack at the Ten Mile Creek No2 oval last Saturday.

His score is believed to be the first and only time a double century has been scored in any grade of HDCA finals. Winkler has now also achieved the rare feat of scoring a century on all three Holbrook grounds.

Winkler’s innings exploded in the last twenty overs of the Holbrook innings adding 160 runs in that time after being just 49 at the twenty over mark.

The match was transferred to the Ten Mile Creek oval, due to the turf wicket being to wet and the match certainly provided plenty of action with a total of sixty three (4’s) and twenty two (6’s) struck.

Lockhart chasing the huge total of 338, made a good fist of it, finishing with 236, with David Gibb making his maiden century, before being run out for 107.

Holbrook 338 ( K Winkler 209, M Stokes 57, B McKenna 24; T Marlow 2/20, D Gibbs 2/24, J Pither 2/43, L James 2/64) def Lockhart 236 ( D Gibb 107, S Alexander 40, M Perkins 20; J McCarthy 4/26, B McKenna 3/24) by 102 runs.

SWAMPIES WARM FAVOURITES FOR FINAL

Henty will go into this weekends HDCA grand final firm favourites following a dominant year, that has seen them stay undefeated and eclipsing all sides along the way.

Henty proved too good in the second semi final against Culcairn and with the venue still the same and the stakes a bit higher they will be confident of taking the flag.

Culcairn will welcome back key players Jamie Cooper and Jamie Lenon from the side that played Holbrook last Saturday and with Steven Brand in crisp form will have some chance.

The depth of Henty has been its strongest point all year, with its batting line up capable from no 1 right through to no 11, with all capable of posting a score.

The game at Henty starts at 1.00 pm on both Saturday and Sunday. The association awards will be conducted after the match for both Division One and Two.

The Division two final will be played at Uranquinty between Uranquinty and Holbrook.

The home team will be favourite to win, although they are coming off two successive grand final losses in recent times.

Both junior finals at Holbrook and The Rock respectively will be completed this Saturday morning after both games were washed out last week.
