CULCAIRN CRUSH HENTY BATS

01 Feb, 2012 08:00 AM
Culcairn continued its late season resurgence with a comprehensive ninety eight run win over Henty and in doing so knocked them off top place.

Chasing the Lions 6/218 on day one, Henty were never in the hunt once leading run scorer Grant Forrest was dismissed and were bowled out for 120.

Forest (33) was dismissed by Jeremy Finlayson in an impressive bowling performance by Finlayson which had him claim 3/15 from seven overs.

Sundries with (18) and Greg Schuller (15) were the only scores above double figures as the Lions bowling attack applied plenty of pressure which also set up two run outs.

Log jam at top of ladder

With just two rounds left in the Holbrook and District Cricket Association 2011/12 season, a fascinating battle for the minor premiership is unfolding.

Henty who have been most pundits favourite to take out the premiership, have hit a stumbling block, following its loss to Culcairn last Saturday.

Holbrook Colts courtesy of a huge win over Holbrook in the local derby have jumped into top position, but face a tough run home to hold that advantage.

Colts commence an away match against Henty starting this Saturday and finish with a home game against Culcairn that could decide a double chance and second place.

Osborne after a slow start has put huge pressure on Holbrook to keep fourth place and this final position looks likely to be sorted when they clash in the final round.

If Holbrook can defeat a much improved TRYC in this round and Culcairn can defeat Osborne, well the Brookers should then hold onto fourth place going into the final round.

Holbrook Colts as expected completed an easy win over Holbrook, with Colts compiling 219 and then have Holbrook in trouble again at 5/63, after making just 62 in the first innings.

Josh Jones impressed with his highest first grade score when he made (74), while Jack Cookson (30) and Jason Weaven (29) got valuable batting time.

Kevin Drum with two wickets was a standout bowler for Holbrook, with good support from Ben McKenna and Alex Ross.

Jim Grills and Weaven both claimed two wickets in Holbrook’s second innings, with only Matt Fairall (27no) making an impression with the bat.

Osborne completed a hard fought twenty six run win over TRYC at Yerong Creek in a high scoring encounter that hung in the balance throughout.

TRYC almost pulled off their first win for the season in pursuit of the Cats 8/231 on day one, being bowled out for 205 in the final over.

Ben Davis bowled his heart out for Osborne to claim the superb figures of 6/84 off twenty four overs, while Jamie Parr supported him with 4/44.

Some excellent top order batting from Todd Hannam (65), Wade Murphy (41), Colin Hagen (25) and Jeremy Bunn (19) had put the home side in a great position.

The crucial wickets of Bun and Hannam exposed the TRYC lower order to a rampant Davis, as he and Parr steered Osborne home in an exciting finish.
