A cast of 40 students at St Paul’s College Walla Walla will present the musical West Side Story, a Romeo and Juliet story set in New York in the 1950s pulsing with racial overtones.
In Leonard Bernstein’s musical score with lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, songs like Maria and America, became popular throughout the world.
The book was written by Arthur Laurents based on a conception by Jerome Robbins.
Rivalry is played out between two street gangs the Jets and the Sharks whose members are from different ethnic and cultural backgrounds. Tony one of the Jets falls in love with Maria, the sister of Shark’s leader Bernardo.
Lachlan Mitchell and Marnie McFarland play the leading roles of Tony and Maria. Other key roles are performed by Ian Ellis, Luke Kotzur, Nicolla Christie, Rowan Brunt and Molly Waters.
St Paul’s drama teacher Stacey Hartwich said the school wanted to try a musical that was more challenging, something that would expand the students’ experiences.
Due to the school’s growing reputation for its performances, a number of primary schools throughout the region will attend the matinee on Thursday June 24. Night performances will be staged on June 24 and 25.
Students, staff and parents have contributed to the production. The orchestra has been formed by Pastor John, former student Catherine Creek, parents and staff. Parents and Friends (P&F) have made the costumes and students have participated in all aspects of the production including lighting, sound, props and scenery.
