Just minutes before the nominees for Greater Hume Shire’s Citizen of the Year were announced, Elmore Stoll, who has been a resident of the Walla Walla area for his whole life, told the Eastern Riverina Chronicle that he had “no chance of being awarded Citizen of the Year”.
In his acceptance speech Mr Stoll spoke about his disbelief at receiving the award and what it takes to make Australia great saying “many of us thank God for this country but it is up to us to help God”.
He continued “Australia is a good country and we can’t afford to lose it. Countries rise and fall - it is a challenge to us. We can’t sit on our hands; we’ve all got to do our part.”
Mr Stoll’s three daughters, Marina, Anita and Narelle, made the trip back home from Sydney to see their father receive this award.
Many things seen in the community today, Mr Stoll contributed to, like the ladder at Morgan’s Lookout and the play area near the park at Billabong Creek.
He is very involved in his community including volunteering as the church warden at the Anglican Church in Culcairn and at the second hand shop.
Mr Stoll is also a member of the Culcairn RS Club and the Culcairn Public School P & C and has been awarded life membership of the Culcairn Pony Club.
Concluding his acceptance speech Mr Stoll said that it is the strength of the family unit that makes this country strong.
Other nominees for the award included Margaret Cooke (Henty), Michelle Galvin (Holbrook), Ivan Hinch (Henty), Nancy Lee (Culcairn), Dot Livermore (Culcairn), Jenny Takle (Henty) and Elizabeth Wilkinson (Carabost).
